The Fédération des parents supports APÉs in their efforts to welcome and integrate parents recently settled in the province

Vancouver, March 6, 2025 – The Summit on the Transmission of French Language will bring together key players in the Francophone community during this major gathering, which was a great success in its last two versions. The objective is to promote breaking down boundaries, collaborative work between the different sectors, the exchange of expertise and good practices, as well as the search for innovative solutions, while keeping children and youth foremost in our thoughts.

More than 200 participants, from all generations and backgrounds, are expected on March 14 in Victoria. A rich program will contribute to the reflections of participants, who are coming from several regions of the province, while encouraging networking for everyone.

To kick off the day, Dr. Stéphanie Chouinard, associate professor in the Department of Political Science at Royal Military College, will present a portrait of the Francophone community, as well as the political, legal, and identity aspects, as seen from a federal and provincial perspective, in order to better understand the challenges and opportunities specific to the Francophone community in B.C.

Presentations by participants from the field of early childhood will follow. They will present the different facets of identity construction and the crucial role of the various contributors throughout a child's development. The importance of intergenerational relationships in the transmission of French will also be highlighted through first-hand accounts.

Francophone youth will be at the heart of this day through:

  • a presentation by Dr. Marie-Eve Bouchard, Assistant Professor in the Department of French, Hispanic and Italian Studies at UBC, who will explore the question of the origin of linguistic insecurity;
  • a panel discussion composed of five young people, and
  • a presentation on the strategic inclusion of youth in community organizations.

Following these presentations, which will get things started and enrich the discussion of the transmission of French, the participants, divided into diverse subgroups (regions, sectors of activity, different generations, etc.), will be invited to a working session. The objective is to come out of this exercise with concrete strategies and actions to be implemented by the key players in the community, while taking into account the specific realities of each participant (field of expertise, regions, audience served, etc.).

A moment of individual reflection will also be part of the exercise, to give each participant time to identify a personal commitment which will promote the transmission of French in their immediate environment.

Under the leadership of the Fédération des parents francophones de C.-B., the 3rd Summit on the Transmission of French Language is made possible thanks to the close collaboration between eight organizations in the Francophone community: la Fédération des francophones de la C.-B., la Société de développement économique de la C.-B., the Office of Francophone and Francophile Affairs at Simon Fraser University, le Conseil jeunesse francophone de la C.-B., le Conseil scolaire francophone de la C.-B., le Conseil culturel et artistique de la C.-B., Réseau-Femmes C.-B., and Carrefour 50+ Colombie-Britannique.

We thank the Government of British Columbia for its financial support in making the 3rd Summit on the Transmission of French Language in BC possible. We would also like to thank the Government of Quebec, through its programmes de soutien en matière de francophonie canadienne, and our sponsors, the law firm Power Law, Air Canada, and Manning Elliott.
